A Guide to Interviewing

When interviewing a nanny it is important to ask the right questions and to see all the original copies of qualifications, certificates etc. It is of utmost importance that references are checked and contacted prior to commencement of employment.

1. When the nanny arrives for the interview ask to see a form of photo identification

2. Introduce the nanny to your family and children

3. Provide a full job description (including pay, hours and term)

4. Include the following questions in your interview

- Education
- Employment History (reasons for termination of employment)
- Ask about their family and background
- Why they chose to become a nanny
- What are their qualities
- Ask them to highlight their strong and weak points
- How would they organise their day with your children
- Do they hold a valid CRB disclosure (get copies)
- Do they hold a valid drivers licence (get copies)
- Do they swim
- Do they hold a first aid certificate
- Do they smoke
- What are their views on discipline
- Do they cook (examples)
- Have they had experience in weaning and potty training
- Do they have any dietary requirements or allergies
- Do they mind working alongside parents/relatives/animals
- What makes them the right nanny for the position you are offering.

5. Ask to see:
- CRB Disclosure
- CV
- Employers/personal References
- Qualifications
- Certificates
- Driving Licence

6. Discuss wages/Hours and outline the position, duties and requirements of the nanny.

7. After the formal side of the interview give the nanny the opportunity to interract with the child/children

8. If you decide you would like to offer the prospective nanny an employment, inform the Parent & Child Nanny Agency who will provide a formal offer of employment form and the prospective nanny's portfolio so that you can make your own further checks for added peace of mind.

9. Invite the nanny back for a second more informal interview, a better chance to get to know the family and provide a contract for them to read through and sign if both parties are happy. It is often the case that nannies are given an initial trial period for parents and nannies peace of mind.

10. Contact a Nanny Tax/PAYE company and apply as an employer.
